Abstract

These case studies were researched in order to highlight to employers how others were developing literacy, language and numeracy skills in the workplace. The studies carried out in Yorkshire and the Humber include Remploy (textiles), Doncaster Health Community, Pittards (leather) and Cadbury Trebor Bassett.

They indicate how employers have recognised the importance of literacy, language and numeracy and linked them to individual and organisational development.

Research methodology:

Case studies developed through interviews and visits to the workplaces.

Key Findings

The main conclusions of the project are:

Partnerships with local colleges/providers are important

bullet

Literacy, language and numeracy development was combined with change and development in the organisation

bullet

Other qualifications, such as NVQs, IT were supported by literacy, language and numeracy

bullet

Practical, work-related outcomes were vital for individuals and the organisations

bullet

Some employees revealed skills and abilities not previously recognised by the employer

Recommendations

Literacy, language and numeracy in the workplace should link individual and organisational development.

Employers should assess literacy, language and numeracy abilities to reveal potential which can support their businesses as well as develop individuals.

Practical, work practices must benefit from literacy, language and numeracy development in order for employers and employees to see benefits clearly.
