| Path: Home > Projects > R&D > Key Findings > Case studies of literacy and numeracy at work |
These case studies were researched in order to highlight to employers how others were developing literacy, language and numeracy skills in the workplace. The studies carried out in Yorkshire and the Humber include Remploy (textiles), Doncaster Health Community, Pittards (leather) and Cadbury Trebor Bassett.
They indicate how employers have recognised the importance of literacy, language and numeracy and linked them to individual and organisational development.
Case studies developed through interviews and visits to the workplaces.
The main conclusions of the project are:
Partnerships with local colleges/providers are important
Literacy, language and numeracy development was combined with change and development in the organisation
Other qualifications, such as NVQs, IT were supported by literacy, language and numeracy
Practical, work-related outcomes were vital for individuals and the organisations
Some employees revealed skills and abilities not previously recognised by the employer |
Literacy, language and numeracy in the workplace should link individual and organisational development.
Employers should assess literacy, language and numeracy abilities to reveal potential which can support their businesses as well as develop individuals.
Practical, work practices must benefit from literacy, language and numeracy development in order for employers and employees to see benefits clearly. |
