Working with Mencap
NIACE worked with Mencap’s Education and Employment Business Unit over 2007-08.
Mencap is committed to providing opportunities for clients accessing its employment services,
especially to develop the literacy, numeracy and communication skills which will be relevant
and useful to them in their everyday working lives.
The work was based on an action research model with two pilot sites. Staff undertook a Skills
for Life awareness raising programme which was contextualised to Mencap services and systems.
Based on the findings of the action research a staff support pack has been written to support
other staff within Mencap to develop literacy, language and numeracy skills with their clients.
