External Evaluation of the Step into Learning Neighbourhood Nursery Training and Development projectProject Status: Completed March 2002 - March 2004The main aim of evaluating this project is to assess the impact of the Step into Learning training and development programme on raising awareness of managers and key staff of the basic skills needs of parents using Neighbourhood Nurseries. This evaluation also provides an opportunity to assess the outcomes of the Step into Learning training against the framework of the Skills for life strategy. We will aim to achieve this by contacting nursery managers and key staff before the training and development programme, and asking them about their knowledge of basic skills, and their ability to identify parents with poor basic skills. In the form of questionnaires, nursery visits and focus groups we will assess the impact of the training programme on the screening and referral processes in the nurseries and to determine the impact the programme has on staff development and parents in the nurseries. From concluding this evaluation we will be able to make recommendations based on needs we have collated from field research and recommendations on the most appropriate models for basic skills delivery in a nursery setting. Our findings will be correlated with those from the parallel initiatives in work with volunteers, work base learning and community based basic skills delivery to provide imaginative and practical suggestions for basic skills activities in the Neighbourhood Nurseries.
