Aims

To advance adult/post-16 numeracy and non-specialist mathematics teaching and learning for everyday life and work in England from its present under-developed state through an integrated programme of research and development.

To achieve this Maths4Life will attempt to:

bulletImprove the quality of teaching and learning
bulletBuild capacity and engage new learners
bulletPopularise maths – stimulate demand and sustain engagement
bulletCommunicate, consult and collaborate with key stakeholders
bulletEnsure numeracy and maths are tackled as a whole organisation priority
bulletConnect numeracy and non-specialist maths provision with specialist maths provision and qualifications, focusing on learners’ qualification aims and programmes post 16

Project Themes

Maths4Life will be informed by six cross-cutting themes:

bulletAttracting new learners: motivation, engagement and achievement.
bulletAttracting new teachers and developing the existing workforce: capacity building.
bulletAttractive provision in a modern environment.
bulletTransfer and embedding good practice.
bulletSubject-specific pedagogy.
bulletLinks with related areas, including the 14-19 agenda.

Update

Work has begun in all of the strands- in particular the first of three stages of pathfinders – running until March 2005. The key theme of this set of four pathfinders is motivation.

bulletAttracting adult numeracy learners (NIACE).
bulletAttracting teachers to numeracy teaching (LLU+).
bulletTalking up numeracy – the use of speaking and listening in motivating learners in offender institutions (Institute of Education).
bulletThe role of ICT in the engagement of learners (CTAD).

Additional Information

Reports on these pathfinders, a good practice video and CD-ROM will be available in the first year of the project.

A website for Maths4Life has been developed. All those involved in or interested in the teaching and learning of adult numeracy and non-specialist maths, are encouraged to register with the project through the website to receive updates, reports and materials, as they are produced.
