John Lawton

NIACE Regional Development Officer – Yorkshire and The Humber

John Lawton, Bachelor of Arts (Dual Honours in Human Geography and Social and Economic History); Diploma in the Teaching of English Overseas is the generic Regional Development Officer for NIACE in the Yorkshire and the Humber Region. John joined NIACE in September 2005.

As Regional Development Officer for NIACE, John liaises with the Regional Learning and Skills Council; the Regional Development Agency; the Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber; the Regional LEAFEA network (the forum for Local Authority Adult and Community Learning Services); and other regional bodies in Yorkshire and the Humber including the regional TUC; the Regional Forum (the umbrella body for the Third Sector), as well as linking in with local and sub-regional partnerships including Personal and Community development Learning Partnerships (PCDL).

Currently John provides support to the Yorkshire and the Humber regional Learners Panel established and supported by the Regional Learning and Skills Council.

John has also worked as an independent consultant working to clients which have included the Department for Education and Skills (DfES); the European Commission; Ufi/learndirect; the Icelandic Supported Employment Agency; LEV (Denmark); Mental Health Media; and NIACE. John’s working career began overseas as a volunteer English language teacher and community development worker in Kenya for Voluntary Services Overseas (August 1979 to February 1982).

John’s particular areas of interest include learner voice; community cohesion; health and disability-related issues; the application of e-learning; international development education; environmental education; learning at work; extended schools, including creative governance; widening participation; and sport and recreation.

John Lawton is currently the elected representative for the United Kingdom on the Board of the European Association for the Education of Adults (EAEA) www.eaea.org a European-wide membership organisation. John is also a co-opted Trustee on the Board of the Open College Network Yorkshire and the Humber (OCNY&H).
